The Master of Science (Civil Engineering) course, or M.Sc.(CE), is hosted by the Department of Civil
Engineering. The program accepts both full time and part time students. To qualify for the M.Sc. (CE)
degree with or without specialization, a candidate must successfully complete a programme of study
consisting of at least 40 Modular Credits (MCs). At least 30 MCs must be taken from 5000 and 6000
level modules. In addition, a student must obtain a minimum CAP of 3.0 (Grade B-) for the best modules
equivalent to 40 MCs (inclusive of compulsory modules, where required). A student may choose to
graduate with the following degrees:
? M.Sc. (Civil Engineering)
? M.Sc. (Civil Engineering) with specialization in Structural Engineering
? M.Sc. (Civil Engineering) with specialization in Geotechnical Engineering
? M.Sc. (Civil Engineering) with specialization in Offshore Engineering
? M.Sc. (Civil Engineering) with specialization in Infrastructure Project Management
For those who wish to graduate with a specialization, they must also obtain a minimum grade point of 2.0
(Grade C) for each of the specified minimum number of compulsory modules stipulated. Students need
only to specify the degree which they wish to graduate at the beginning of their final semester of study.
Specialization in Structural Engineering
Candidates who wish to obtain the MSc (CE) with specialization in Structural Engineering must pass with
a grade point of at least 2.0 (Grade C) for each of the following six modules (24MCs):
(i) CE5509 Advanced Structural Steel Design
(ii) CE5510 Advanced Structural Concrete Design
(iii) CE5514 Plate and Shell Structures
(iv) CE5604 Advanced Concrete Technology, OR
CE5610 Precast and Retrofitting Technology
(v) CE4257 Linear Finite Element Analysis, OR
CE6006 Advanced Finite Element Analysis
(vi) CE4258 Structural Stability and Dynamics, OR
CE6705 Analysis and Design of Buildings Against Hazards
Should a student have sufficient reasons to replace any of the above modules by another appropriate
module, approval must be sought from the Head, Department of Civil Engineering or his nominee.
The remaining four modules (16MCs) to satisfy the degree requirements may be selected from level
5000 and 6000 modules offered by the Department of Civil Engineering. For modules outside the
Department of Civil Engineering, prior approval must be sought from the Head, Department of Civil
Engineering or his nominee.
Specialization in Geotechnical Engineering
Candidates who wish to obtain the MSc (CE) with specialization in Geotechnical Engineering must pass
at least five (20MCs) of the following modules, each with a grade point of at least 2.0 (Grade C):
CE5101 Seepage & Consolidation of Soils
CE5104 Underground Space
CE5105 Analytical & Numerical Methods in Foundation Engineering
CE5106 Ground Improvement
CE5107 Pile Foundation
CE5108 Earth Retaining Structures
CE6101 Geotechnical Constitutive Modelling
Should a student have sufficient reasons to replace any of the above modules by another appropriate
module, approval must be sought from the Head, Department of Civil Engineering or his nominee.
The remaining five modules (20MCs) to satisfy the degree requirements may be selected from level 5000
and 6000 modules offered by the Department of Civil Engineering. For modules outside the Department
of Civil Engineering, prior approval must be sought from the Head, Department of Civil Engineering or his
nominee.
Specialization in Offshore Engineering
Candidates who wish to obtain the MSc (CE) with specialization in Offshore Engineering must pass at
least five (20MCs) of the following six modules, each with a grade point of at least 2.0 (Grade C):
CE5307 Offshore Hydrodynamics
CE5703 Analysis & Design of Offshore Structure
CE5710 Design of Floating Structures
CE5711 Offshore Moorings & Risers
CE5712 Offshore Pipelines
CE5713 Offshore Foundations
Should a student have sufficient reasons to replace any of the above modules by another appropriate
module, approval must be sought from the Head, Department of Civil Engineering or his nominee.
In addition, he must complete at least three (12MCs) of the following modules:
CE4257 Linear Finite Element Analysis,
CE4258 Structural Stability and Dynamics
CE5105 Analytical & Numerical Methods in Foundation Engineering
CE5308 Coastal Engineering and Sediment Transport
CE5509 Advanced Structural Steel Design
CE5514 Plate and Shell Structures
CE5603 Engineering Economics and Project Evaluation
CE5701 Engineering Fracture Mechanics
CE5702 CE Reliability Analysis & Design
CE5804 Global Infrastructure Project Management
CE6003 Numerical Methods in Engineering Mechanics
CE6006 Advanced Finite Element Analysis
CE6101 Geotechnical Constitutive Modelling
The remaining two modules (8MCs) to satisfy the degree requirements may be selected from level 5000
and 6000 modules offered by the Department of Civil Engineering, which also include the above
mentioned modules. For modules outside the Department of Civil Engineering, prior approval must be
sought from the Head, Department of Civil Engineering or his nominee.
Specialization in Infrastructure Project Management
For this specialization, students must pass at least five (20MCs) of the following seven modules, each
with a grade point of at least 2.0 (Grade C):
CE5804 Global Infrastructure Project Management
CE5805 Construction Equipment & Methods
CE5806 Construction Project and Site Control
CE5603 Engineering Economics and Project Evaluation
CE5207 Pavement Network Management Systems
PM5103 Contract Management
PM5109 Construction Law
Should a student have sufficient reasons to replace any of the above modules by another appropriate
module, approval must be sought from the Head, Department of Civil Engineering or his nominee.
In addition, he must complete at least three (12MCs) of the following modules:
CE4281 3D GIS for Urban Infrastructure
CE6001 Operations and Management of Infrastructure Systems
CE5204 Pavement Design and Rehabilitation
CE5604 Advanced Concrete Technology

The remaining two modules (8MCs) to satisfy the degree requirements may be selected from level 5000
and 6000 modules offered by the Department of Civil Engineering, which also include the above
mentioned modules. For modules offered outside the Department of Civil Engineering (except those
listed above), prior approval must be sought from the Head, Department of Civil Engineering or his
nominee.
Finally, students must ensure that at least five (20MCs) of the ten modules to be counted for this
specialization must be those offered by the Department of Civil Engineering (i.e. with the CE prefix in the
module code)
*Not all modules listed are necessarily available in any one year.
