　　THE MA (SOUTHEAST ASIAN STUDIES) COURSEWORK programme was launched in 1995 with an initial intake of 9 part-time candidates. Since then over 300 have graduated, proving a demand for continuing education among individuals with a recently acquired or long-held interest in Southeast Asia.Adopting a multidisciplinary approach, the programme caters primarily to suitably qualified working adults who, for professional or personal development, would benefit from a deeper and more focussed academic understanding of various real-world issues and life experiences in Southeast Asia. The exposure to different theoretical perspectives and methodologies aims to encourage MA students to explore their own areas of interest with greater competence and confidence. The programme largely attracts professionals in the fields of marketing and management, public relations, education and research and the military, as well as a significant number of full-time candidates, particularly from Southeast Asia. Given the broad scope of study, students’ academic backgrounds span a range of disciplines in the humanities, business studies, engineering and the sciences.If you want to learn formally about the peoples and region of Southeast Asia in the context of a multi- and inter-disciplinary approach, then go ahead and apply for admission to Master of Arts (Southeast Asian Studies) by coursework.

The multi-disciplinary approach covers geography, history, anthropology, sociology, economics, politics, and the international relations of Southeast Asia. You will have the choice of completing the degree in two semesters (full-time) or up to four semesters (part-time). You will be given six semesters as the maximum period of candidature for full-time and eight semesters for part-time. Classes run in the evenings between 6.30-9.30 pm.

Degree Structure
Coursework students have a choice of undertaking part-time or full-time study. The maximum period for the completion of the Master of Arts (Southeast Asian Studies) programme is 36 months for full-time study or 48 months for part-time study. The maximum periods include periods of leave of absence subject to the Programme's and Faculty approval.
A full-time candidate must complete at least 3 modules in a semester and may complete up to a maximum of 5 modules in a semester. A part-time candidate must complete at least 1 modules in a semester and may complete up to a maximum of 3 modules in a semester. Only those locally domiciled are eligible for part-time study.
To graduate, each candidate must have read and passed 10 modules, including SE5151 Approaches to the Study of Southeast Asia (compulsory module), and obtained a minimum Cumulative Average Point of (CAP) of 3.00 based on a 5-point scale at the end of the course of study.
Each coursework module is taught and assessed over one semester and entails attending 3-hour weekly seminars for which extensive preparation, including presentations of class discussion papers and reading assignments, is expected. MA students electing the Independent Study module (ISM) attend weekly meetings with their supervisor once their topic is approved. Modules are selected from those on current offer as determined by the availability of specialist staff in each semester. If class and examination schedules permit, candidates may elect to read modules offered in other graduate coursework programs of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS).
