The aim of the Master of Social Sciences (Social Work) programme by Coursework is to provide candidates with training for advanced direct and/or indirect social work practice and research. The objectives are to train suitably qualified local and regional social service professionals by providing professional knowledge and skills in:
Advanced interpersonal social work practice;
Leadership, management and policy analysis of social services; and
Social work research and evaluation.
Overall, the programme will enhance professional practice as it is primarily research and skills-based in approach. The programme adopts an integrative framework in applying cross-cultural issues in the local contexts.
The programme prepares professionals in 3 areas of concentration:
Direct Practice
Focus in practice theory and clinical skills in working with individuals, families and groups, supervisory skills, research and evaluation of practice skills.
Management of Social Services
Focus in management theory and social service budgeting and planning; programme implementation, monitoring and evaluation; personnel management and agency level policy development.
Research and Evaluation
Focus on research skills in social services and problems as well as the management of research projects and evaluation in social service delivery.
Duration
The maximum period of candidature is 36 months of full-time study or 48 months of part-time study from the date of commencement of the course, inclusive of approved leave of absence and medical leave. Leave of absence of up to one year will not be counted towards a candidate’s maximum candidature. Subsequent period of leave will be considered as part of the candidature.
The maximum periods of candidature are exclusive of any period of preparatory study that may be required by the Department of Social Work.
The Head of the Department of Social Work may require a candidate to withdraw from his/her programme of studies for the degree of Master of Social Sciences (Social Work) if, in the Head’s opinion, the candidate’s progress has not reached a satisfactory level of proficiency.
Course Structure
The Masters of Social Sciences (Social Work) programme comprises of the following components:
3 Essential modules, which includes 1 supervised project/practicum
7 Elective modules
Coursework
A candidate for the degree of Master of Social Sciences (Social Work) must offer not fewer than ten modules. The ten modules must include three essential modules, of which one must be Fieldwork which consists of either a supervised project or a practicum.
Of the ten modules offered, at least eight modules must be offered at level 5000/6000. Up to two modules may be offered at level 4000.
The candidate may opt to focus in one or more areas of concentration by taking at least three relevant modules within the concentration.
In addition, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, on the advice of the Head of the Department of Social Work, may require a candidate to undertake such other work as may be deemed relevant to his/her candidature for the degree of the M.Soc.Sci. (Social Work).
A) Three Essential Modules
Candidates must offer SW6101, SW6102, and SW5112 (or SW5111 for those without a degree in social work or equivalent).
For Fieldwork component, candidates are required to complete a Supervised Project (SW5112) which will be an independent and original piece or work which involves innovative and original initiatives such as developing a new social service programme/policy or conducting an original piece of field research. Candidates without a degree in social work or equivalent professional training will be required to complete a Fieldwork Practicum (SW5111) in lieu of the Supervised Project. Practicum requires 800 fieldwork hours and field supervision under an approved supervisor. Field integration seminars are scheduled in conjunction with the Practicum.

Candidates may select from the following choice of elective areas. On a case-by-case basis, candidates may be permitted to offer electives outside the Social Work Masters programme. In addition, candidates may, on a case-by-case basis, be permitted to offer up to two modules at level 4000.

Cross registration of other graduate or advanced modules may be allowed on the recommendation of the academic adviser.
Note:
Not all elective modules are necessarily available in any one year.
Unless otherwise indicated, each module shall be of one semester's duration.

Examination
Unless otherwise exempted by the Executive Committee of Graduate Studies, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, a candidate must pass such examinations as may be prescribed by the Committee in the areas of study.
A candidate who fails any module in an examination may be permitted to re-sit the examination of the same module, re-take the same module or replace the module with another module, as specified by the Department.
A candidate is permitted to re-sit or re-take the same module or replace it with another module provided:
a. he/she has not failed more than once before in the failed module; and
b. he/she has not exceeded the maximum period of candidature.
A candidate who does not withdraw from a module within a given timeframe must sit the examination in that module unless granted leave of absence by the Head of Department of Social Work. The Head will consider each application according to the circumstances of the case.
A candidate who is not granted leave of absence but who withdraws from any module of an examination after a given deadline will be deemed to have sat and failed in that module of the examination. No extension of the maximum period of candidature will be permitted as a result of such failure.
