OVERVIEW

This course is designed for practising engineers and information technologists who wish to improve their knowledge and skills in the generic area of communication engineering or seek specialisation in one of the following three areas: Telecommunications, RF Engineering and Wireless Communications.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

A candidate will be admitted to the programme either as a full-time or a part-time candidate at the beginning of an academic year. Classes are conducted in the evening on a semestral basis. The requirements for the degree include satisfactory completion of a total of 30 academic units (AUs). This would typically consist of four core subjects and (i) four electives and a research project of 6 AUs based on which a dissertation must be submitted, or (ii) five electives and an independent study module. Each subject of 3 AUs consists of 39 hours of lectures. Classes for each subject will be held once a week and examinations will be conducted during office hours at the end of each semester.

The minimum and maximum periods of candidature for a full-time candidate are one year and three years respectively. The minimum and maximum periods of candidature of a part-time candidate are two years and four years respectively.

Communication signals and baseband transmission. Digital modulation/demodulation. Error correction coding. Spread-spectrum techniques.

EE6104 NETWORK PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS
Review of probability theory and graph theory. Queuing theory. Networks of queues. Flow and congestion control. Routing-flow allocation. Controlled and random access techniques in data networks. Performance analysis of circuit switching.

EE6105 RF ENGINEERING TECHNIQUES
Transmission line circuit design and S-parameters. Measurements of S-parameters. Active devices and equivalent circuit models. Field and circuit analysis techniques. RF sub-systems engineering. RF transceiver architecture.

EE6107 RF CIRCUIT DESIGN
Amplifier circuits. Oscillator circuits. Detector and mixer circuits. Frequency multiplier and control circuits. Microwave frequency synthesisers. Design exercises using commercial RF CAD tools.

EE6108 COMPUTER NETWORKS
Network protocols and services. Transport protocols and services. Local area networks. Wide area networks and internetworking. Broadband and asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks.

EE6109 MIC & PRINTED ANTENNA DESIGN
Microstrip transmission lines. Analysis of passive reciprocal microwave devices. Microwave filter synthesis and design. Basic antenna parameters. Analysis and design of microstrip patch antennas. Microstrip antenna arrays. Printed antennas for modern wireless communications. Design exercises of microwave integrated circuits and microstrip antennas.

EE6122 OPTICAL FIBRE COMMUNICATIONS
Optical fibre waveguides and transmission characteristics. System components. Modulation techniques. Subsystem design. Coherent systems. Measurements. Applications.

EE6124 SATELLITE, FIXED & MOBILE RADIO SYSTEMS
Radio propagation. Path analysis. Terrestrial line-of-sight, tropospheric and mobile radio systems. Satellite communication systems.

EE6125 NETWORK PLANNING & MANAGEMENT
Network performance issues. Network simulation and optimisation. Network operations, control and maintenance. Network administration. Network management database and tools. Capacity planning. Network security and integrity.

EE6126 WIRELESS MULTIPLE ACCESS COMMUNICATIONS
Wireless channel models. Modulation techniques. FDMA/TDMA techniques. CDMA systems. Channel equalisation.
(Knowledge of basic probability, Fourier transform, z-transform and basic matrix algebra will be useful.)

EE6127 WIRELESS NETWORKING
Overview of wireless network protocols. Signalling protocol in wireless networks. Mobile access control protocols in wireless networks. Protocol design strategy for wireless networks and case study. Emerging technologies for wireless networks.

EE6303 ELECTROMAGNETIC COMPATIBILITY & INTERFERENCE
EMC/EMI overview. EMI properties of passive components. Crosstalk and cabling. Grounding. Shielding. Balancing and filtering. Non-linear phenomena. Digital circuit noise and radiation. Electrostatic discharge. EMI emission requirements and test methods. Susceptibility and testing.

EE6326 DIGITAL TELEVISION SYSTEMS

EE6401 ADVANCED DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING
Probability and random processes. Multi-rate digital signal processing. Linear prediction and optimum linear filters. Power spectrum estimation.

EE6402 REAL-TIME DSP DESIGN & APPLICATIONS
Architectures for general-purpose digital signal processors. Peripherals for DSP applications. Development tools for DSP applications. Digital FIR/IIR filter implementations. Fast Fourier transform implementations.

EE6425 SPEECH ANALYSIS & PROCESSING
