The aim of the MSc (KM) programme is to provide graduates who have relevant work experience with advanced professional training and postgraduate education in Knowledge Management.
This Master's programme caters for working professionals who are dealing with an information-intensive environment and who want to further their career in modern knowledge-based organisations.
The focus of this programme covers management, technology and information topics essential for meeting the demand of employers in Singapore and the region for well-rounded knowledge professionals. In addition, flexibility in the three-tier programme structure meets the needs of students in wanting relevant core skills and further developing specialised knowledge in order to thrive in the new knowledge economy.
Course Structure
Students of the MSc (KM) programme can choose to study by:
Coursework and Dissertation
Coursework Only
Each subject in the curriculum is assigned 3 academic units (AU), with the exception of Professional Seminar and Knowledge Management Research Project that are assigned 2 and 6 academic units respectively.
A three academic unit course comprises 39 contact hours of lectures, tutorials and laboratory work. With the introduction of the Academic Unit System, the student will accumulate the required AU over the period of study

A total of 6 AUs is accumulated for successful completion of the Knowledge Management Research Project that includes the submission of a dissertation.

Duration of Programme
The part-time programme can be completed within two academic years (four semesters).

Admission Requirements
Applicants seeking admission to the MSc (KM) programme must have:
A good Bachelor's degree in any discipline, and
Preference is given to applicants with working experience in information and knowledge-related fields.

Curriculum
In the first year, students take three core subjects in the first semester and two group ‘A' electives in the second semester. In the second year, they take two group ‘B' electives per semester in addition to the Knowledge Management Research Project.

Coursework and Dissertation Option

Students choose three core subjects, six electives and a project for which a dissertation is submitted. The three core subjects provide the common essential knowledge of the information and knowledge management.
Building on this foundational knowledge, students take elective subjects to specialise in an area appropriate to a particular knowledge management profession.
General Electives
Students choose two of the Group A electives that provide the basic competencies for their
intended area of concentration.
Subsequently, they choose four of the Group B electives for concentration. Two of these four electives may be chosen from courses offered in the MSc (Information Studies) programme or other Master's level courses offered in the School of Communication & Information or in other schools in the University, subject to approval of the Dean.

Foundations of Knowledge Management
Conceptual framework: concepts and complexities of knowledge, forms and sources of knowledge, contributions of intellectual capital and intangible assets. Theories and principles of knowledge management: different perspectives of knowledge management, steps in the KM process, and organisational enablers for sharing and managing knowledge. Strategies for implementing knowledge management programs and Knowledge management practices:
case studies of successful implementation of knowledge management initiatives.

Knowledge Management Tools
Electronic Document Managements (EDMS), Customer Relationship Management (CRM), workflow, content management, business intelligence tools, search engines and intelligent agents. Mind mapping, idea processors, and taxonomy builders. Knowledge Portals, intranets, and collaboration and learning tools. Establishing knowledge management infrastructure. Evaluation criteria. Selection criteria for knowledge management tools.

Professional Seminar
Series of seminars will be conducted to provide an overview of the areas related to the field of knowledge management. Speakers will be drawn from academia, industry and professional organisations. Method and approaches to research and development suitable in the field of knowledge management will be covered and case studies of implementation of knowledge management will be shared.

Basic networking concepts including local area networks and wide area networks. TCP/IP addressing, routing and supporting protocols. Network design, security and management. Dissertation Knowledge Management Research Project
Harnessing the knowledge, skills and attitudes acquired in the courses and applying them to solve KM-related research problems, create new knowledge or develop new KM products or services is an essential part of the programme. In this respect, each student is mentored by a staff member in a project leading to a dissertation of up to 15,000 words. The Project can be in any area of the KM discipline. However, students are advised to work on a project that is related to their work or professional development.
