Overview
The postgraduate programme in Offshore Engineering offered by the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) is specifically designed to develop skills and competence in structural mechanics and hydrodynamics. It provides the insight needed to solve structural and hydrodynamic problems in offshore engineering.
The course is primarily designed for practicing engineers and scientists who may enrol as full or part-time candidates. The minimum duration to complete the course is 2 semesters (1 year) and the maximum duration is 8 semesters.
The course leading to the degrees of Master of Science in Offshore Engineering comprises coursework with or without a M.Sc. Dissertation. A minimum of 30 Academic Units (AU) is required for graduation. In general a candidate will take subjects from several disciplines within offshore engineering and graduate with a fairly broad knowledge, leading to the degree of Master of Science in Offshore Engineering – M.Sc. (Offshore Eng).
Program Structure
The programme comprises coursework subjects with or without a dissertation. To qualify for the MSc degree, a student must satisfactorily complete at least 30 Academic Units (AU). The candidates will be offered subjects from any area of specialisation in offshore engineering. The candidates may also be offered subjects from areas outside offshore engineering with approval from the Dean of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The minimum number of AU that a candidate can accumulate from any particular area in offshore engineering is 18 AU.
If a candidate wishes to write a dissertation, it will be considered equivalent to two 3 AU subjects and it can be spread over two semesters (3 AU per semester). The dissertation can be in any area of specialisation in offshore engineering as long as the maximum number of AU accumulated from any particular area outside offshore engineering does not exceed 12 AU. In lieu of writing a dissertation, a candidate may take two 3 AU replacement subjects and one of these subjects must have an independent study component.
The Dean may, based on previous academic records of a candidate and possible transfer of credits, reduce the required number of Academic Units that a particular candidate has to obtain to qualify for the MSc degree.
Subjects of Study
Normally each subject will be conducted once a week for three hours of lecture. Full-time students may register for up to 15 AU of subjects while part-time students may register for up to 9 AU of subjects per semester. A full-time student may complete the programme in approximately two semesters or 12 months, while the part-time students will be able to complete the MSc programme in four semesters or 24 months.
The Offshore Engineering subjects to be offered by the School in a particular semester will be selected from a list of courses. Not all the courses will be offered in any given year. The current list of subjects is as follows:
CV6801 Sea Loads (3 AU)
CV6802 Advanced Hydrodynamics (3 AU)
CV6803 Numerical Methods (3 AU)
CV6804 Advanced Offshore Engineering (3 AU)
CV6805 Design of Offshore Structures (3 AU)
CV6806 Submarine Pipeline Design (3 AU)
CV6807 Fatigue and Fracture of Marine Structures (3 AU)
CV6808 Safety Management and its Applications (3 AU)
CV6898 Independent Study (3 AU)
Dissertation in Offshore Engineering (6 AU)

Dissertation in Offshore Engineering
An in-depth case study or research project that provides the candidate with an opportunity to investigate and analyse a problem of interest and also apply modern techniques for design and assessment. Once a suitable topic has been selected, the candidate carries on with the study and reports to his supervisor at regular intervals. The candidate is required to submit a dissertation based on the findings of the investigation.
